Tyla Laura Seethal interprets the 2024 Met Gala theme “Garden of Time” uniquely with a sand dress. The South African singer-songwriter was inspired by the passage of time and decided to wear a dress designed by Balmain.
Tyla Wears A Delicate Balmain’s Sand Dress
For her debut at the Met Gala, Tyla Laura Seethal collaborated with Balmain to craft a truly imaginative ensemble. Embracing the theme of ‘time’ from the evening’s ‘Garden of Time‘ dress code, the Balmain team fashioned a dress from sand, a unique and creative interpretation.
“The inspiration behind this creation stemmed from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece. The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination, and I could not be happier with the end result.”
Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain to Vogue.
“We were looking to do something creative, something completely different for my first Met Gala. So, when Balmain showed me the idea and sketch, I knew it was perfect. The idea was wild, and I loved it. I’m excited and a little nervous, but I’m looking forward to having a fun night at The Met!”

Balmain meticulously designed a strapless dress that hugged Tyla’s body. The dress gradually fans out into an ethereal organza mermaid train. Furthermore, the dress made from three different shades of sand, mixed with tiny crystal studs. This careful construction ensured the dress shimmered with every step Tyla took, embodying the ‘Garden of Time’ theme.
Furthermore, the small sand hourglass clutch Tyla brings in her hand perfects the “Garden of Time” dress code for the 2024 Met Gala.
Tyla Was Carried Up at the 2024 Met Gala
However, wearing a sand-made dress up the Met steps took courage—and some assistance.
The delicate nature of the dress meant that Tyla had to be carefully carried up the stairs to the museum’s entrance on the evening of the Met Gala. Even after the red carpet walk, the dress required some adjustments.
In a candid moment shared on his Instagram, Balmain revealed a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the 2024 Met Gala. With a steady hand and a touch of suspense, he made a daring adjustment to Tyla’s sand dress. It encapsulated the high stakes and creative problem-solving that goes into such a unique fashion choice.
